Where Is Brian Laundrie’s Sister Cassie Now? All About Her Life After Her Brother Murdered Gabby Petito — and Why She Doesn’t Speak to Her Parents Today

Brian Laundrie’s sister Cassie has been forever changed since her brother murdered his fiancée.

On Sept. 11, 2021, Gabby Petito was reported missing while traveling cross country in a van with Brian, who had returned home alone to his parents’ home in Florida. Shortly after being declared a person of interest, Brian went missing himself — just days before Petito’s body was found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

It was later revealed that she had been strangled to death by Brian, who died by suicide shortly after. Now, more details of Petito’s final days are being told in Netflix’s American Murder: Gabby Petito.

In the docuseries, Petito’s parents revealed they received no response from Cassie during their desperate search for their daughter. But in a NewsNation clip shared in the docuseries, Cassie shared that she was “just as upset, frustrated and heartbroken as everyone else.”

“I am losing my parents and my brother and my children’s aunt and future sister-in-law on top of this,” she said. “We have literally been finding everything out with the news like everybody else.”

So where is Brian Laundrie’s sister Cassie now? Here’s everything she said after her brother murdered Gabby Petito and her life since.

Brian’s parents welcomed his sister Cassie about 10 years before having their son. Now, Cassie has a family of her own. She married her husband, James “Jimmy” Luycx, in December 2015, per her Facebook, and they share two sons.

About nine months into Brian and Petito’s relationship, the couple relocated to Florida. In the docuseries, a friend revealed that the move was motivated by Brian’s desire to be closer to his sister and nephews, who had been living there for years.

Brian and Cassie had a close relationship. In an October 2021 Good Morning America interview, she described him as “a wonderful uncle” who had “always been there” when she needed him.

Cassie, along with her husband and children, joined Brian and their parents on a camping trip to Fort De Soto, Fla., after he returned home to Florida without Petito in August. A few days after her initial GMA interview, Cassie spoke to the outlet again and said that there was “nothing peculiar” about that last hangout with her brother.

“We just went for a couple of hours and we ate dinner and had s’mores around the campfire and left,” she said. “There was no feeling of grand goodbye … I’m frustrated that, in hindsight, I didn’t pick up on anything. It was just a regular visit.”

While initially speaking with GMA, Cassie said that the “oddest thing” about the situation was that she hadn’t been in contact with her brother while he was missing.

“I wish I could talk to him,” she said. “I know that it’s all because the lawyer’s advising them not to say anything.”

In her second GMA interview, Cassie maintained that she didn’t know his whereabouts.

“I worry about him, I hope he’s okay and then I’m angry and I don’t know what to think,” she said. “I would tell my brother to just come forward and get us out of this horrible mess.”

She added that she didn’t know if her parents — Christopher and Roberta — were involved. “I think if they are, then they should come clean,” Cassie said.

She continued, “I hope my brother’s alive because I want answers just as much as everyone else.”

“I’ve been cooperating so that everyone gets answers. They deserve answers,” she said of the Petito family.

In the initial GMA interview, which took place just days after Petito was reported missing, Cassie told the outlet that she and her family “want Gabby to be found safe.”

“She’s like a sister and my children love her,” she said. “All I want is for her to come home safe and sound and this to be just a big misunderstanding.”

Cassie also told the outlet that she was cooperating “in every way that [she could]” so that the case could be solved. “I wish I had information or I would give more,” she said.

As for the nature of Petito’s relationship with Brian, Cassie told GMA that the body camera footage released by the police from before her disappearance looked “typical” of the pair, explaining that they would often “take a little break and come back and be fine, because that’s what you do in a couple.”

In September 2022, one year after Brian died, Cassie posted a Facebook tribute in which she advocated for suicide awareness.

“I miss and think about my brother everyday. Today marks one year I’ve been without him but it’s worse than that & not for Facebook,” she wrote. “I just want to remind my friends here that they are loved always and no matter what you’re going through, life is beautiful even in the pain.”

On the anniversary of his death each year since, Cassie has re-posted the message, continuing to share her grief while simultaneously advocating to end the stigma of domestic violence against men.

As for her relationship with her parents now, on the day that the Netflix docuseries premiered, Cassie shared on Instagram that she has been “non contact” with her parents for “almost two years.”
