Our street just a little bit ago! Scary!!😱 Miami, Arizona

The town was recently hit by severe flash flooding in September 2025.

  • Heavy monsoon storms dumped significant rainfall, causing flash flooding in the Globe-Miami area of Gila County.
  • The flooding was described by some residents as the worst in at least four years.
  • The deluge caused substantial damage to homes and businesses, including a wall collapse at a local saloon and the temporary closure of a Walmart in nearby Claypool.
  • A section of U.S. Route 60 in the Miami area was completely shut down due to the water and thick mud covering the roadway.
  • The area has been prone to flooding, which can be exacerbated by runoff in the valley nestled between mountain ranges.

Historical Flooding

Miami, Arizona, is located in a region with a long history of flooding, particularly during the summer monsoon season and from larger winter storms. The history of the region shows dozens of flood events dating back to the late 1800s.

The area is part of the larger southeastern Arizona region that has seen major, often destructive floods tied to:

  • Monsoon Thunderstorms: Causing rapid flash flooding in canyons, washes, and rivers.
  • Remnants of Tropical Storms/Hurricanes: Bringing widespread heavy rainfall, especially in the fall months.

Gila County and Arizona state agencies work on flood-related initiatives, including floodplain management, flood warning systems, and seeking federal grants (like FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance) to help reduce the long-term risk of flood damage.
