Viral Strange will list some pictures that really need a second look. Have you ever seen a picture that you had to look at twice (or perhaps multiple times) to understand what you’re looking at? - Ambiguous Images (Figure-Ground Illusions): These pictures can be perceived in two different ways, and your brain flips back and forth between them.
- Examples: The classic Rubin’s Vase (is it a vase or two faces?), or the “My Wife and Mother-in-Law” drawing (is it an old woman or a young woman?).
- Forced Perspective / Accidental Illusions: These are often everyday photographs where the camera’s angle makes two objects that are far apart look like they are touching or interacting in a strange way.
- Examples: A person appearing to hold the sun, or a misplaced shadow/texture that makes a floor look like it has a deep hole in it. A recent viral one involved a photo that looked like a person and two dogs, but was actually three dogs due to the clever blending of a poodle’s tail and head.
- Color/Light Constancy Illusions: These show how our brain automatically adjusts to perceived lighting, which can trick us into seeing colors incorrectly.
- The Dress: Is it blue and black or white and gold? This divided the internet because people’s brains made different assumptions about the light source.
- Geometric/Distortion Illusions: Lines or shapes that appear distorted or bent, but are actually straight or parallel.
